Through his work with Safer Handling, he has focused on reducing the need for excessive force, inappropriate restraint and prolonged isolation by promoting proportionate, safeguarding led responses to challenging behaviour. His Soft Restraint methodology and trainer programmes have been delivered internationally and recognised within professional publications and sector guidance.
Doug works closely with organisations to equip staff with practical, legally compliant techniques that prioritise safety, dignity and risk reduction. His approach centres on prevention, confidence building and creating safer working environments for both staff and those in their care.

Mike brings over 35 years’ experience across custodial, care and high risk environments, Mike brings extensive expertise in managing complex and challenging behaviour safely and proportionately.
Following a 20 year career within the prison service, including specialising in Use of Force and serving as a National Instructor with the National Tactical Response Group, Mike went on to establish his own consultancy, providing strategic advice and training across the UK and internationally.
In recent years, his focus has centred on supporting Secure Children’s Homes, Young Offender Institutes and specialist care and education settings. He works closely with senior leaders and frontline staff to develop prevention first approaches, reduce incidents and ensure that physical intervention practices remain legally compliant, proportionate and aligned with safeguarding responsibilities.
